Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has insisted that every player in his squad is a potential starter as they prepare for their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Mali.
Speaking ahead of the tie at the 2025 tournament in Morocco, Thiaw dismissed the idea of a fixed first eleven, highlighting the depth and competition within his squad.
“When I say I have 28 starters, it bothers some people, but I’ll say it again,” he said. “The competition is healthy, especially in attack. I have several different profiles, each with their own strengths.”
Senegal arrive at the quarter-finals as one of the tournament favourites, with a squad packed with experience and quality across all positions. Thiaw believes that internal competition has been key to maintaining high standards throughout the campaign.
“There are no substitutes in this group,” he added. “It’s a privilege to have such a squad.”
The Teranga Lions face a determined Mali side still chasing a first AFCON title, in what promises to be a fiercely contested West African derby.
With expectations high and a place in the semi-finals at stake, Thiaw’s comments underline Senegal’s confidence not just in their starting line-up, but in the collective strength of the group as they continue their defence of the continental crown.
