The first day of the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup saw Brazilian outfit Fluminense triumph over Saudi’s Al Hilal whilst 2021 champions Chelsea edged past 2021 finalists Palmeiras.

Bothe games ended in the same fashion as Fluminense hit two past Al Hilal as they responded with just a goal whilst Chelsea also saw off Palmeiras in a 2-1 victory— both winners seal their places in the semifinals as they will face off against eachother in the penultimate round of games to determine the finalists.

Fluminense and Al Hilal locked horns at Camping World Stadium in Florida, piling pressure on each other from the blast of the whistle at the 65,000+ capacity stadium with roaring fans from both teams backing their respective sides with their unflinching support and cheers.

Brazilian side Fluminense opened the scoring with a blistering shot from outside the 18-yard box, as midfielder Martinelli shot a powerful one from distance to put his side ahead with just five minutes remaining to go into halftime.

Fluminense became dominant as they overpowered their opponents, also with the goal advantage as they finished the first half with the lead as Al Hilal marched into the locker room with immense frustration.

The second half began with the two teams pilling pressure on each other but it did not take long for Al Hilal to respond with their only goal of the game as attacker, Marcos Leonardo hit one from close range after a sublime header assist from Koulibaly was placed in front of him— he dispatched the ball straight into the net and changed the complexion of the game as he pulled parity and went on to increase his goal tally at the tournament to 4, making him joint-top scorer with Benfica’s Benfica who got eliminated by Chelsea in the round of 16.

On the 70th minute, 24-year old Hercules put Fluminense up again with a fabulous strike from the 18-yard box to restore the lead for the Brazilian side.

The game ended 2-1 in favor of Fluminense as they sealed a stunning victory and a subsequent qualification to the semifinals of the competition.

Palmer and pals see off Palmeiras

The second quarterfinal game of the day was witnessed is great fashion as Chelsea cruised past Brazilian side Palmeiras to secure a place in the semifinals of the competition— a deja-vu of the 2021 final in Abu Dhabi.

The game was intense from start as Chelsea became the dominant side, heaping lots of pressure on their Brazilian opponents until their efforts bore fruit in the 16th minute as defender Trevor Chalobah laid a penetrating pass to Cole Palmer who dispatched a wonderful shot Palmeiras goalkeeper and captain Weverton who couldn’t stop the ball from getting into the back of the net.

Chelsea dominated possession and kept taking the game to Palmeiras as the Brazilians kept on pressing without giving in— this led to the game being really intense until the referee blew the whistle for halftime.

Eight minutes after the break, Chelsea’s new boy who spent the just ended season at Palmeiras— a club that brought him into the spotlight to be seen by Chelsea, scored against his parent club in a stunning fashion as his powerful shot went past Chelsea goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez and hit the crossbar, went straight into the net to restore parity as it became a stalemate— one goal apiece for both sides.

The Brazilian outfit began piling lots of pressure on Chelsea from the equalizer, making the Chelsea fans look desperate in their pursuit for a semifinal berth.

Both teams locked horns and fought fiercely till the 83rd minute when the winner emerged; a short cross taken by Chelsea led to a sublime pass from Gusto which ricocheted the Palmeiras defender and got past goalkeeper Weverton and got into the back of the net.

The game ended 2-1 in favor of the 2021 UEFA Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup champions as they edged a step closer to another final in four years.

The semifinal game between Fluminense and Chelsea will take place on Tuesday, July 8 in a penultimate round to determine the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup finalists
