Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has explained why Real Oviedo midfielder Kwasi Sibo was left out of the Black Stars squad for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.
The 27-year-old has been in fine form for La Liga returnees Oviedo, having helped the Asturias outfit who have been eluded top-flight football for over two decades and with just his first season with them in the second-tier, he helped them climb to the first- tier, the La Liga and featuring in their opening two games of the season against Villarreal and Real Madrid. However, he did not make the 24-man squad announced by head coach Otto Addo on Tuesday, which saw Joseph Paintsil, Ibrahim Osman and Tariq Lamptey recalled to the team.
According to Asante Twum, the technical team is impressed with Sibo’s progress but opted to maintain the current core of the squad.
“Kwasi Sibo will get his chance soon. The technical team has been monitoring him and is impressed with his work rate. Although they opted to maintain the core team following recent performances against Chad and Madagascar, Sibo is on their radar and will likely get an opportunity soon,” Asante Twum wrote on Facebook.
Despite his strong club form, the former Cheetah FC, UD Ibiza and FC Watford man is yet to represent Ghana at any level.
Meanwhile, the invited players are expected to report to camp starting Monday, September 1, ahead of the double-header. Victories in both matches would confirm Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
