Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has cautioned the Black Stars technical team, led by head coach Otto Addo, not to consider inviting players who previously turned down the chance to represent Ghana.
Following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, several European-born players — including Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah — have reportedly expressed interest in joining the squad for the global showpiece.
Nyaho-Tamakloe’s Position
Speaking to Graphic Sports, the veteran administrator was firm in his stance:
“Those who initially turned down invitations should not be invited at all, but those who have never been invited must be given the opportunity to come and play.”
He argued that loyalty and commitment should be central to squad selection, especially as Ghana prepares to compete on football’s biggest stage.
Context
- Ghana missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence in over 20 years.
- Despite that setback, the Black Stars topped their qualifying group with 25 points to secure a return to the World Cup.
- The team exited at the group stage in Qatar 2022, heightening the determination to make a stronger impact in 2026.
- The World Cup draw will be held on Friday, November 5, when Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents.
- The tournament will be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico next summer.
This intervention reflects a broader debate in Ghanaian football: balancing the inclusion of diaspora talent with the importance of loyalty and long-term commitment to the national team.
