Ex-Ghana international William Kwabena Tierro has cautioned the Black Stars against underestimating Panama at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that there are “no minnows” in modern football.
Speaking to Kessben FM, the former Asante Kotoko midfielder urged Ghana to prepare thoroughly for what he described as a challenging Group L, which includes England, Croatia, and Panama.
“It won’t be easy for Ghana at the World Cup. It will be a disaster should Ghana underestimate any of our group opponents. For me, there are no minnows in the game anymore because football has evolved.”
Tierro’s Key Points
On Panama’s threat:
“You underrate Panama at their own risk. Our style is similar to that of South America and North America. For Panama to qualify from this continent justifies their capabilities heading into the World Cup.”
On preparation:
“Our group is not easy at all. I will urge Ghana to prepare well for the tournament.”
Ghana’s Group L Fixtures
- June 17 – vs Panama (Toronto, Canada)
- June 23 – vs England (Boston, USA)
- June 27 – vs Croatia (Philadelphia, USA)

Tierro’s comments highlight the danger of complacency in Ghana’s World Cup campaign. While much of the focus will be on clashes with England and Croatia, Panama’s qualification from the competitive CONCACAF region underscores their resilience and potential to cause upsets.
Meanwhile, Ghana will test their readiness in a high-profile friendly against Germany on March 30, 2026, offering a crucial benchmark before the tournament.
