Augustine Arhinful, former Ghana international, has thrown his full support behind Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, urging the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to maintain faith in the 50-year-old tactician despite mounting public criticism.
Addo, who led Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, is now one point away from securing a second consecutive qualification, following the team’s 5–0 demolition of the Central African Republic on Matchday 9.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Arhinful dismissed calls for Addo’s dismissal, citing the coach’s growth, tactical maturity, and willingness to improve.
“This is the second time he will be taking the Black Stars to the World Cup,” Arhinful said.
“I believe that he has learned his lessons and wants to improve, so I wouldn’t say that he should be sacked.”
He also praised the influence of technical advisor Winfried Schäfer, and revealed that former players continue to offer private guidance to Addo.
“His substitutions against CAR were apt… You could see Otto Addo is improving and learning as a coach.”
Sports Minister Kofi Adams recently voiced reservations about Addo’s long-term future, suggesting that the government would review his position after the qualifiers, despite the team’s resurgence.
With Ghana aiming for its fifth World Cup appearance — after campaigns in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 — Ahinful’s endorsement adds weight to the call for continuity, mentorship, and strategic support.
