The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has assured fans that the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will take place as scheduled, firmly dismissing speculation that Morocco could withdraw as host.

Reports had suggested that Morocco was reconsidering its hosting role following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with South Africa reportedly expressing interest in stepping in should the North African nation pull out.

However, speaking at a CAF Executive Council meeting press briefing, Motsepe made it clear that there had been no change to the tournament’s plans.

“There are discussions taking place, and there are a lot of competitions. Morocco came to assist because there were many countries that wanted to host it, but because we didn’t have time, our standards were very high,” he said.

He added that while other nations have shown interest in hosting the tournament, some have requested a change in dates, something CAF is not prepared to consider.

“We can’t change the date because it’s one of those qualifiers for the Women’s World Cup,” Motsepe explained.

“The WAFCON continues, it’s going to be successful, and we will make sure it takes place within the window.”

The 2026 edition of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to run from 17 March to 3 April.

For Ghana, the tournament carries particular significance. The Black Queens will be aiming to end a decade-long wait for a first continental title and reassert themselves among Africa’s elite in women’s football.

Motsepe’s comments appear designed to calm uncertainty and refocus attention on preparations, as CAF moves to ensure the competition remains on track both logistically and competitively.

With qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup also at stake, the governing body has made it clear: the 2026 WAFCON will proceed and on schedule.
