Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed bold optimism about the Black Stars’ chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the team has what it takes to go far and potentially win the competition.
Ghana, four-time African champions, face a daunting task in Group L, where they will come up against Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
The Black Stars head into the tournament following a difficult run of results and are currently without a permanent head coach after the departure of Otto Addo. Despite this, Adams insists the team is on course to be ready in time for their opening match.
“If I tell you we are ready… we don’t even have a head coach,” he told Channel One TV. “But I see us being ready by the time we play our first game against Panama.”
The minister acknowledged that the current squad is still rebuilding and may lack the cohesion of previous generations, but maintained that the talent available is sufficient to compete at the highest level.
“This is a World Cup I see us doing well. We should be hopeful… we still have what it takes to go very, very far, maybe even win the World Cup,” he added.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to appoint a new head coach in the coming days as preparations intensify. Ghana will face Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in friendly matches ahead of the tournament.
The Black Stars open their campaign on 17 June against Panama, before facing England and Croatia later in the group stage, as they aim to improve on group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
