The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports has formally written to Sports Minister Kofi Adams, demanding the disclosure of the budget for Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali.
The Black Stars will face Chad in N’Djamena on September 4 before hosting Mali in Accra on September 8 in Matchdays 7 and 8 of the qualifiers.
The Committee’s move follows President John Mahama’s pledge during his first Nation Address earlier this year, where he promised full transparency in government spending on the national team.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the FA and other sports associations must be made known to the public. After all, it is the taxpayers’ funds that are used to fund these activities,” the President declared in Parliament.
Despite this assurance, the budgets for the March qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar were never made public, despite several media inquiries. After those games, Minister Adams promised that future financial details would be released in advance.
“By our next game, which is in September, we’ll have ample time to publish the budget ahead of expenditure,” Adams stated in March.
The Select Committee’s request therefore seeks two disclosures:
-
The expenditure for the March qualifiers.
-
The full budget for the September fixtures against Chad and Mali.
Currently, Ghana sits top of Group I with 15 points from six games, and victory in September could place the four-time African champions within touching distance of a World Cup return.
