Captain of the Ghana national football team, Jordan Ayew, says Ghana will approach the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the ambition of making a strong impact rather than simply taking part.
The tournament, which will be hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico, will run from 11 June to 19 July 2026, with Ghana hoping to deliver a memorable campaign on football’s biggest stage.
The Black Stars, four-time African champions, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team.
Ghana will be aiming to improve on their recent World Cup performances after suffering group-stage exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Fire-for-Fire on Adom TV, Ayew emphasised that the team is determined to compete strongly and make the nation proud.
“We are going to the World Cup to give our very best. We want to put on a show and, hopefully, achieve the results we are aiming for. We are not just going to the USA to make up the numbers,” he said.
The Leicester City forward added that unity, humility and positive support from fans will be crucial to the team’s chances.
“We will stay humble and focused, and hopefully we can dream of achieving big things. We need positive energy around the team, and we will do everything we can to make the nation proud,” Ayew said.
As part of their preparations for the tournament, Ghana will play a series of international friendlies against Germany national football team and Austria national football team, later this month. Further warm-up matches are scheduled against Mexico national football team in May and Wales national football team in June.
Ghana, appearing at the World Cup for the fifth time, will open their campaign against Panama on 17 June, before facing England on 23 Juneand Croatia on 27 June in their final group match.
With preparations underway, Ayew and his teammates will be hoping to deliver a performance capable of restoring Ghana’s strong reputation on the world stage.
