About 80 per cent of disasters in Ghana are self-inflicted, Evans Anakwa, Director in charge of Floods at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has said.

According to him, if Ghanaians would fix their attitudes, the incidence of flood and fire disasters in the country would be minimised.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, in connection with the effects of the Weija Dam spillage, on Friday June 30, Mr Anakwa noted people had built their houses and sited their shops in waterways, a situation that has resulted in increased flooding across the country.

He also said people are fond of dumping refuse in drains, resulting in drains being choked and, subsequently, needless floods.

Mr Anakwa revealed that NADMO would soon start arresting and prosecuting violators of AMA’s by-laws as a way of preventing these needless disasters.

He said: “We are going to arrest and prosecute all those who have built in waterways and those dumping refuse in gutters, we will arrest them and hand them over to the police. This will ensure discipline in the work we are doing.

“As we speak, about 80 per cent of the disasters we have in Ghana are man-made. People build in waterways, some raise containers at wrong locations, and so we will start prosecuting them to deter others from dong same.”
