Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful believes current Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan could have prevented the controversy generated by his customized armband in the AFCON qualifier match in Kumasi against Ethiopia.

A cross section of Ghanaian football fans came down heavily on the 50-goal man for wearing a captains armband with his face and iconic number 3 jersey number on it.

For some, it only fueled speculations on a supposed rift between he and deputy captain Andre Ayew.

Ayew had to call from a new armband when Gyan was substituted in the second-half of as he could not have used the customized armband.

Arhinful believes the controversy could have been avoided by pre-informing then public about the armband which was reported to have been worn by Gyan to mark his 50- goal landmark.

“I don’t think there is much to say on that but it has brought about a lot of argument. I don’t have any problem with that but probably is because of the way we handled it. If we had said it before the match that, look we recognise our captain so much so that this is what think we can do,” Arhinful told Football 360 on Kwese Free Sports.

“Because yesterday [Sunday] was his fiftieth goal. Maybe he dreamt he was going to score.”
