Gov’t to build modern markets in every district for 24-hour economy
The Minister for Local Government, Sanitation, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to construct modern markets in every district as part of efforts to operationalise the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, June 12, the Minister said the initiative would identify commercial hubs in each district and channel resources into their development to boost economic activity nationwide.
“What we are doing in every district is identifying the commercial centres. Once that is done, we can allocate 25% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to GHC 24 million annually towards developing these commercial hubs.
“The plan includes building schools nearby so farmers can have their children in school while they work in the markets. There will also be fire and police posts to respond to emergencies such as fires or theft. Our focus on the 24-hour economy goes beyond just providing electricity,” he stated.
The initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement that the 24-Hour Economy policy, described as a “game changer,” will officially take effect from July 1.
Spearheaded by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the 24-Hour Economy policy aims to keep key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services running continuously to boost productivity and job creation.
