Ghanaian filmmaker and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Socrate Safo, has voiced his frustration over what he describes as the party’s persistent disregard for creatives within its ranks.

Speaking on Okay FM in an interview with Halifax Ansah-Addo, Mr. Safo ,who previously served as Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture expressed admiration for how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) continues to recognise and elevate individuals from the creative sector.

“I jealous them. Let me confess. I jealous them. I feel that the NDC is respecting the mental fortitude of the creatives. They are listening and they have not stopped.”

“I look at my colleagues; the Rex Omars, the KODs, Abeiku Santanas. How many people didn’t we have in the NPP? What did they do for us? You go and they look in a condescending manner, thinking they are better than you. We had the creatives who could do excellent jobs but they were overlooked just because they claim they don’t have degrees,” he stated.

His remarks followed the recent appointment of actress Kalsoume Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain by President John Mahama, a decision he praised as a step in the right direction for the creative industry.

Mr. Safo lamented that during the NPP’s time in government, creative professionals were often sidelined and denied significant roles in national development, largely due to academic reasons.

In contrast, he said, the NDC consistently empowers creatives and integrates cultural perspectives into governance.

He urged the NPP to learn from the NDC’s example and build stronger engagement with Ghana’s creative arts community if it hopes to fully harness the sector’s potential.
