MP slams Mahama over Ghana’s UN abstention on LGBTQ+ rights

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised President Mahama following Ghana’s recent abstention from a United Nations vote on LGBTQ+ rights.
The Ranking Member has accused the President of abandoning Ghana’s traditional moral values and failing to defend the country’s longstanding cultural position on the global stage.
According to Rev Ntim Fordjour, the decision to abstain rather than vote against the resolution sends the wrong message both domestically and internationally.
In a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, July 9, the Assin South Member of Parliament said, “Ghana has abstained from a vote on LGBTQ at the UN. President Mahama has completely shifted away from the country’s bold stance against LGBTQ.”
The MP warned that Ghana’s abstention undermines the values championed by religious leaders, traditional rulers, and the wider Ghanaian public.
He called on key institutions such as the National House of Chiefs and various faith-based organisations to speak out against what he sees as a weakening of the national moral compass.
“Faith-based organisations, House of Chiefs and citizens must rise up boldly to defend our cherished values,” he said.
Citing a recent viral incident involving a same-sex couple filmed kissing under Ghana’s iconic Independence Arch, the MP described it as a symbolic affront to national pride that went unaddressed by the Mahama-led administration.
“This absurd vote comes barely a week after a same-sex couple were emboldened to kiss under the Independence Arch; desecrating our national monuments, without a pinch from President Mahama and his government,” he said, describing the act as a national affront that went unaddressed by the presidency.
