A disturbing incident at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic has reignited concerns about the growing threat of violence against healthcare workers in Ghana after a midwife was allegedly assaulted by a relative of a patient while carrying out her official duties.

The incident, which occurred at the health facility in Tema on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, has drawn strong condemnation from the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), which described the attack as unprovoked and unacceptable.

According to the Regional Health Directorate, the midwife was performing her routine responsibilities by enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy when she was allegedly attacked by a family member of a patient.

Health authorities explained that the healthcare worker had approached the visitor and informed the individual that official visiting hours had ended and that all visitors were required to leave the ward in accordance with hospital regulations designed to ensure patient safety, privacy, and effective healthcare delivery.

However, what began as a routine enforcement of hospital policy reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in the alleged assault of the midwife within the hospital premises.

The incident has since attracted national attention following the circulation of a video on social media showing the aftermath of the attack.

In a press statement issued on June 5, 2026, and signed by the Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Robert Amesiya, the Ghana Health Service expressed outrage over the incident and pledged its full support to the affected healthcare worker.

“The staff member, a midwife, was attacked by a patient’s family member while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. The attack was unprovoked,” the statement noted.

The Directorate stressed that health professionals report to work each day to provide essential medical services to the public and must be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation, abuse, or physical violence.

“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” the statement added.

The Ghana Health Service also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention following the incident.

According to the Directorate, police officers responded promptly to the situation, restored calm at the facility, and arrested the individual alleged to have carried out the assault.

Health authorities disclosed that the suspect is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026, to face legal proceedings arising from the incident.
