Minority demands fairer allocation of road infrastructure funds

The Minority in Parliament has condemned the John Mahama administration for what it describes as a lopsided allocation of road infrastructure under the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review.

The caucus has pointed out that the government’s flagship “Big Push Programme” has notably excluded key economic regions, such as Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region, which together account for over one-third of Ghana’s population and economic activity.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, argued that the regional disparity undermines both national development and equitable resource distribution.

“It is unacceptable that Greater Accra and Ashanti, the engine rooms of our economy, have been sidelined in this plan. This is a matter of national concern, not partisan grievance.”

The Minority expressed particular concern over the exclusion of the Accra–Kumasi Road, Ghana’s busiest highway, which continues to face severe congestion and delays. The road is plagued by deteriorating sections and halted dualisation projects at key points like Osino, Nsawam, Enyeresi, and Konongo.

Other major omissions include the Atebubu–Kwame Danso Road and the Anwia Nkwanta corridor in Kumasi, both of which had seen some progress under earlier budget allocations.

“The silence on these corridors tells us the government has no intention of completing what was already started,” Mr Nyarko said.

The caucus called on the government to reassess its infrastructure investments and prioritise national demand and data-driven planning over political motivations.

“Infrastructure planning must follow data and demand, not political expediency. Ghanaians deserve transparency, fairness, and strategic thinking, not a haphazard list designed for headlines,” he said.
