Finance Ministry pledges support for public procurement and supply bill

Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has assured that the ministry will actively support the push for the passage of the Public Procurement and Supply Bill, which aims to regulate procurement in the public sector and prevent financial leakage in government projects.
Speaking at the National Procurement and Supply Chain Conference, Mr. Nyarko highlighted that the bill would also incorporate environmental sustainability to foster a green economy.
The conference, held under the theme “Re-imagining Procurement and Supply for Sustainable Development and Economic Resilience,” focused on the pivotal role of procurement in driving economic growth.
“This is to confirm that cabinet is currently considering this bill and the ministry of finance with parliament and the lead sponsor ministry of education and all stakeholders will ensure its passage in the next sitting.
He added that he would personally reach out to the Minister of Education to prioritise the bill and that the government aims to send it to Parliament by October, with hopes of passing it by the end of the year.
Mr. Nyarko also emphasised the importance of licensing procurement practitioners to operate in a regulated environment, believing it will help stimulate economic growth.
He acknowledged the Ghana Institute of Procurement and Supply Chain’s significant role in advancing government procurement processes and assured that attention would be given to the Procurement and Supply Chain Professionals Bill when Parliament resumes.
Dr. Simon Annan, President of the Ghana Institute of Procurement and Supply Chain, welcomed the assurance and promised to advocate for the bill’s passage.
The two-day conference, organised by the Institute, underscored the importance of procurement in the nation’s economic activities.
