Mahama to meet CJ, AG over public fund mismanagement

President John Dramani Mahama will on Thursday, October 9, convene a high-level meeting with the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and other key stakeholders to address the persistent mismanagement of public funds flagged in successive Auditor-General reports.
The decision was announced during the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards and Chief Executives of Public Services, held in Ho on Wednesday, October 8.
President Mahama expressed deep frustration over the recurring financial irregularities uncovered each year, describing them as a major obstacle to national development.
“I’ve been watching the Public Accounts Committee, and it’s so pathetic. Every year we gather, and the same reckless misuse of public funds is reported,” he said.
He stressed the urgent need for a fast-track legal process to hold accountable those involved in financial misconduct, warning that without real consequences, the cycle of abuse will persist.
President Mahama highlighted that the funds lost to mismanagement as revealed in the Auditor-General’s reports, could have been instrumental in advancing Ghana’s development agenda.
He also criticised the lack of enforcement of constitutional provisions requiring Parliament to establish a dedicated committee to oversee the implementation of the Auditor-General’s recommendations. Existing mechanisms such as Audit Report Implementation Committees (ARICs), he noted, have proven largely ineffective.
“Until people know they will be held responsible for misusing public resources, nothing will change,” he added.
The upcoming meeting is expected to propose concrete policy and legal reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and deterring future financial malpractice in public institutions.
