Police bust fake online food delivery scam, arrest 10 suspects

The Ghana Police Service has arrested ten individuals involved in creating fraudulent online food delivery platforms to scam unsuspecting customers.
The arrests were made by the Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following weeks of intelligence-led operations.
The first six suspects, Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah were apprehended on October 1, 2025, during a targeted operation in Sogakope. They were found to be running a sophisticated online scam impersonating well-known food brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko.
Preliminary investigations revealed the suspects had set up fake websites and social media pages mimicking these popular brands. Victims who placed orders were asked to make advance payments via mobile money but never received their food.
In some cases, the suspects also gained unauthorised access to victims’ mobile money and bank accounts, withdrawing funds under the guise of helping with payment processes. Digital devices connected to the fraud were seized and are now undergoing forensic analysis.
The operation culminated in the capture of the ringleader, Elijah Sotama Etse, also known as “Pop Smoke,” along with Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli, at a hideout in Haatso, Accra, on October 12, 2025. Police seized 12 mobile phones believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities.
All ten suspects are currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court today, Monday, October 13, 2025. The police are urging anyone who may have fallen victim to similar scams to report to the nearest station to aid in the investigation.
