The Attorney-General’s Department has revealed that it will call four witnesses in the ongoing trial of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is facing charges over alleged illegal mining activities on his Samreboi concession.

Mr. Boasiako is accused of permitting mining operations on the concession without lawful authorisation.

A scheduled case management conference on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, was adjourned following procedural developments in court.

Earlier in the day, the prosecution served additional disclosure documents on the defense, prompting defense counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, to request time to study the new materials.

During proceedings, the court sought clarification on the number of witnesses the state intends to call. Prosecutors initially mentioned five but later confirmed that four witnesses would testify after the defense indicated that it had received statements from only four.

Presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, adjourned the case to November 27, 2025, for the case management conference.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, Mr. Appiah-Kubi welcomed the adjournment, saying it would allow the defense team to properly review the prosecution’s latest filings.

He expressed confidence that his client would be exonerated once the trial commences.

The case continues to draw significant public interest, given Mr. Boasiako’s political stature and the broader national discourse on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
