Ghana excluded from US green card suspension- Ablakwa
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has clarified that Ghana is not included in the United States government’s recent Green Card review and temporary immigration suspension.
Speaking after a meeting with Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson, on Monday, December 1, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa said he received formal assurance that Ghana is not among the countries affected by the new measures announced by the Trump administration.
The meeting covered recent developments in Ghana–US relations, with the Ambassador confirming that Ghanaian Green Card holders are exempt from the latest review, which followed a security incident involving an Afghan national who killed two National Guard members. Although the US has not publicly released a full list of affected or exempt countries, Ghana was explicitly excluded.
Minister Ablakwa also discussed several bilateral issues, including the reinstatement of five-year visas for Ghanaian travellers, the withdrawal of 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other qualifying agricultural products. Additionally, preparations for Ghanaian supporters attending World Cup activities were reviewed.
The talks also focused on enhancing security cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement, which will involve increased intelligence sharing and expanded training exercises using US military aviation assets, all coordinated with Ghanaian authorities.
On trade, the Minister expressed optimism about continued discussions under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to securing agreements that best serve the country’s interests.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasised that Ghana’s national interests remain the priority in all engagements with the United States.
