PURC advises consumers to use standard materials for safe utility connections

The Bono East Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has urged utility consumers to ensure the use of approved and standard materials when connecting electricity and other utility services to their homes.
The Regional Manager, Cassiel Eghan Asiedu, cautioned that the use of substandard materials is often more costly in the long run and poses serious risks to lives and property. He stressed the need for consumers to prioritise quality materials in all electrical installations and related services.
He gave the advice during a public education programme held at Jema in the Kintampo South District.
“We have witnessed many fire incidences which have destroyed lives and properties only to hear that the materials used were of inferior qualities,” he said.
Mr. Asiedu warned that some individuals sell unapproved electrical materials to unsuspecting consumers, adding that their low prices often attract buyers who later suffer the consequences.
“Sometimes, some unscrupulous persons go around selling some unapproved materials to unsuspecting consumers and because they are cheap people end up buying them not looking at the challenges in the near future,” he noted.
He further advised consumers to deal directly with licensed utility service providers and report any challenges to the Commission for redress.
He also highlighted the Commission’s performance in 2025, stating that the office facilitated credit adjustments amounting to GH¢115,153.97 in favour of customers who reported billing anomalies.
Additionally, he disclosed that the Commission helped recover GH¢21,991.47 for the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) through its regulatory interventions.
The PURC reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers while promoting safety, fairness, and compliance within the utility sector.
