The Electricity Company of Ghana (Electricity Company of Ghana) has revealed that it invested over GH¢3 million in the first quarter of the year to improve power reliability and stability across 40 communities in six districts within the Accra West Region.

The Accra West Regional General Manager, Sariel Etwire, said the investment forms part of ongoing efforts by the utility provider to address power supply challenges and improve overall customer service delivery.

Speaking at a technical review meeting in Accra, she reiterated ECG’s commitment to providing reliable, safe, and quality electricity services to support national economic growth.

She explained that several factors continue to contribute to transformer damage and network instability, including illegal connections, vandalism, and overgrown vegetation near power infrastructure.

According to her, overloaded transformers often result in equipment failure, leading to outages and low voltage challenges, particularly during peak demand periods.

“When transformers become overloaded, we risk losing them through burnouts, and customers experience persistent low voltage and phase outages, especially during peak hours,” she said.

Madam Etwire urged residents and community leaders to support ECG by reporting individuals involved in illegal connections or interference with the company’s installations, stressing that such cooperation is critical to protecting infrastructure.

She also advised the public to report fallen electrical conductors immediately, especially after heavy rainfall, and encouraged communities to work with district offices to trim trees encroaching on power lines.

She listed several beneficiary communities where faulty, overloaded, or vandalised transformers had been replaced or upgraded. These include Dunyo Township, Dunyo New Site, DVLA Kuntunse, Amasaman China Mall, Oduntia, Sarpeiman, Amasaman Market, Treba Junction, and Pokrom in the Nsawam and Amasaman districts.

Other affected communities include areas within the Bortianor, Dansoman, Ablekuma, and Achimota operational districts, such as Odumase Junction, Ablekuma Joma, Nsakina, Gbawe, Anyaa Market, and Israel Park.

She further disclosed that ECG is currently undertaking a large-scale programme to install and upgrade transformers across its operational areas to reduce overloading and improve service reliability.

Madam Etwire noted that the Accra West Region covers eight operational districts, namely Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle Bu, and Nsawam.

Community representatives in the beneficiary areas expressed appreciation for the interventions and pledged their support in safeguarding installations against vandalism and illegal connections.
