Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has praised emerging midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi following his impressive performance in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales, describing the youngster as a “natural talent” whose rapid development has caught the attention of football fans and pundits alike.

Yirenkyi, who plays for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland, was one of Ghana’s brightest performers during the international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on 2 June. The midfielder capped an assured display by scoring the Black Stars’ only goal as Ghana continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 20-year-old’s contribution went beyond finding the net. He impressed with his composure in possession, intelligent movement and ability to link play in attacking areas, producing a mature performance that belied his age.

Speaking to Citi Sports after the match, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer Gyan said Yirenkyi’s display underlined why he is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young talents.

“He’s a natural talent. The way he’s rising is very incredible,” Gyan said.

“Everybody saw what he did. It wasn’t only the goal. His positioning, his passing, the way he joins attacks and everything else showed the quality he has.”

Gyan also highlighted the midfielder’s overall influence on the team’s performance, noting that his awareness and movement helped drive Ghana’s attacking play throughout the game.

In a lighter moment, the former Sunderland striker joked about Yirenkyi’s shirt number, drawing comparisons with former Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah.

“He’s not the only player to score wearing the number three jersey. Jonathan Mensah did it too. It looks like goals are in the number three shirt,” he said.

Yirenkyi’s emergence comes as Ghana intensify preparations for the World Cup. The squad has since arrived in the United States for the next stage of its training camp and will face Jamaica on 10 June in another warm-up fixture.

The Black Stars will then turn their attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Four-time African champions Ghana will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a campaign that remains one of the nation’s greatest achievements on the global stage.
