GNFS Responds to Multiple Fire Outbreaks and Flood Emergencies After Heavy Rainfall in Greater Accra

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has carried out a series of emergency operations across parts of the Greater Accra Region following Wednesday’s heavy rainfall on June 3, 2026, responding to fire outbreaks and rescuing residents trapped by floodwaters.
At Oyarifa, personnel from the Madina Fire Station were dispatched at about 5:30 p.m. to a fire involving an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meter board within a residential property. Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control by 6:20 p.m., with no casualties recorded.
Later that evening, the same station responded to two separate flooding incidents at Oyarifa KB Junction and Old Ashongman near Bohye Church around 6:30 p.m. In total, nine individuals who were trapped by rising floodwaters were safely rescued without injuries.
At Kanda Post Office area, firefighters intervened at approximately 9:49 p.m. to contain a fire involving underground electrical cables behind a self-contained residential building. The blaze was successfully extinguished, and no casualties were reported. Investigations into the cause are ongoing.
In Makola, a shop located opposite the Accra City Fire Station was already extinguished upon the arrival of firefighters at about 12:50 a.m. on Thursday. Although some goods were partially damaged, no injuries were recorded. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Another incident was reported at Nungua Cold Store Area at 1:56 p.m., where personnel from the Trade Fair Fire Station responded to a fire at a residential structure near the local police station. Firefighters found a room and a porch used as a kitchen partially burnt, but no casualties were recorded.
At Kuntense Satellite, firefighters from the Amasaman Fire Station responded at about 4:03 p.m. to a fire involving an ECG pole fitted with meters. The equipment was completely destroyed, and investigations are underway to establish the cause.
The GNFS commended the rapid response of its personnel across all affected stations and urged the public to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall. The Service also advised residents to immediately report emergencies through its official hotlines (112, 0302 772 446, and 0299 340 383) to ensure swift response and minimise damage to life and property.
