Major Fire Destroys 32 Rooms at Accra Police Barracks Annex Near Central Police Station

Firefighters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have successfully brought under control a major fire outbreak at Accra Water Works, opposite the Accra Central Police Station, which destroyed parts of the Police Barracks Annex and left extensive property damage.
According to the GNFS, the fire started on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in the evening, triggering an emergency response after a distress call was received at 8:05 p.m. Firefighters from the Accra City Fire Station arrived at the scene within two minutes, only to find the blaze already fully developed.
Due to the intensity of the fire, additional units were deployed from the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area, and Circle Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to assist in containment efforts.
The fire was brought under control at 11:50 p.m., confined at 10:29 p.m., and finally extinguished at 3:41 a.m. on Thursday after nearly seven hours of continuous firefighting operations.
The GNFS confirmed that no fatalities were recorded. However, one firefighter sustained critical injuries during the operation and was rushed to the Police Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and responding to treatment.
The blaze caused extensive destruction at the Police Barracks Annex, completely gutting 32 rooms along with their contents. A separate one-storey building within the facility was also damaged, leaving several police personnel and their families displaced and counting significant losses.
Despite the widespread damage, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby Ghana Water Limited installation and adjoining structures, thereby averting further destruction.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine whether it resulted from an accident or other circumstances. Security and emergency officials continue to assess the scene as inquiries progress.
The GNFS has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue and has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property through improved fire prevention and response measures.
