Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has called for patience and protection for emerging midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi following the youngster’s match-winning performance in Ghana’s opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yirenkyi scored deep into stoppage time to hand the Black Stars a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, capping another impressive display that has further underlined his immense potential.

While the midfielder has received widespread praise from fans and pundits, Ayew believes it is important that expectations surrounding the young talent are carefully managed.

Speaking to 3Sports after the match, the Ghana captain applauded Yirenkyi’s attitude and contribution since breaking into the senior national team.

“He’s been exceptional since coming into the national team. All credit to him because he deserves it. He does his job,” Ayew said.

The experienced forward, who is making his third FIFA World Cup appearance, stressed that Yirenkyi’s development should remain the priority.
