Woman Remanded Over Alleged GH¢300,000 Bribe Attempt After Police Seize Suspected Indian Hemp
A 40-year-old woman, Theresa Sungbung, has been remanded into police custody by the Damongo Circuit Court after she was allegedly caught attempting to bribe police officers with GH¢300,000 following the discovery of substances suspected to be Indian hemp in her possession.
The accused was arrested on July 13, 2026, at the Banda-Nkwanta Police Checkpoint with 84 parcels of suspected Indian hemp, according to the police.
Theresa Sungbung appeared before the Damongo Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Livingston Lartey Yao Ameevor, where she was remanded to assist with further investigations. She is expected to return to court on July 28, 2026.
The Bole District Police Commander, ASP Mahadi Mensah, said investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend other individuals believed to be linked to the alleged drug-related offence.
He explained that during questioning, the suspect claimed she was transporting the substances to Signye, an illegal mining community in the Bole District, before travelling to the Upper West Region to deliver another consignment.
ASP Mensah also cautioned commercial transport operators to exercise greater vigilance when accepting passengers and goods, warning that failure to verify what they are carrying could unintentionally draw them into criminal activities.
Police say investigations into the matter are continuing.
