Accra came to a virtual standstill on the evening of Wednesday, June 3, as a torrential downpour swept through the city, submerging key roads, cutting off major transport corridors and leaving motorists and commuters trapped in gridlock for hours on end.

The rains wreaked havoc across multiple parts of the capital, rendering several routes completely impassable as floodwaters overwhelmed roads and brought traffic to a grinding halt.

Among the hardest hit was the Ashaiman Underbridge — a critical link connecting Ashaiman to surrounding communities including Sakumono, Kanewu and Adjei Kojo — which was entirely swallowed by floodwaters, severing movement along one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Other areas included Hatso, Agbogba and its surrounding areas.

The impact, however, stretched well beyond Ashaiman, with widespread waterlogging reported across numerous other parts of Accra, compounding the chaos as desperate motorists sought alternative routes only to find those equally congested.

For many commuters, what should have been a routine evening journey turned into an ordeal lasting well over five hours, as the sheer scale of the flooding left virtually no escape route untouched.

The scenes once again raised familiar questions about the state of Accra’s drainage infrastructure and its ability to cope with heavy rainfall — a challenge the city has continued to grapple with year after year.
