JUST IN: Accra-Kumasi highway blocked after multiple-vehicle crash at Birimso Bridge

A major traffic gridlock has paralyzed the N6 Accra–Kumasi Highway following a serious multi-vehicle collision at the Birimso Bridge.
The crash involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a heavily loaded articulated truck, and a sedan.
The wreckage is currently causing a total obstruction of the highway, bringing all direct travel between Accra and Kumasi to a complete standstill.
Emergency Response and Traffic Diversions
The Eastern South Regional Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) team from Kibi is currently on-site managing the crisis.
To prevent total gridlock, police have implemented emergency travel diversions:
- Accra-bound vehicles are being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam.
- Kumasi-bound vehicles are being rerouted through Apedwa.
Advice to Motorists
The MTTD urges all drivers to cooperate fully with officers directing traffic at the diversion points. Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes if possible and to exercise extreme caution when approaching the area.
Emergency crews remain on the scene working to clear the heavy vehicles and restore normal traffic flow.
Further updates on casualties and the progress of the clearing operations will be provided as they become available.
