Ghana’s Golden Arms target world glory at 2026 Armwrestling Championship

Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, will compete at the 2026 World Armwrestling Championship in New Delhi, India, as preparations begin for one of the sport’s biggest global events.

The championship will be held from 26 October to 7 November under the auspices of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF). About 1,500 of the leading armwrestlers from around the world are expected to take part, giving Ghana’s athletes the chance to measure themselves against the strongest and most technically accomplished competitors in the sport.

The Golden Arms will travel with a nine-person team, buoyed by Ghana’s strong performance at the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Accra. That result highlighted the depth of talent available to the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and raised expectations ahead of the international competition.

Among the athletes expected to feature are world champion Grace Minta, world championship medallists Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo, and African champion Daniel Acquah.

The group combines experience at the highest level with continental success and developing talent. Ghana’s aim is to build on its achievements in Africa and make a significant impact against the world’s leading pullers in New Delhi.

National camp to begin preparations

The federation will establish a national camping programme to bring selected athletes together for an intensive period of preparation. Work at the camp will include physical conditioning, strength development, technical and tactical training, recovery, discipline and mental readiness.

The programme will also allow the coaching staff to evaluate the athletes and refine the final squad for the different weight categories. The team will be led by coaches Husseini Akueteh Addy and Nii Otu Larkyne.

A key focus will be ensuring that the athletes are prepared for the standards and demands of international competition. The technical team will seek to help Ghana’s competitors convert their strong record at continental level into effective performances against opponents from across the globe.

GAF president Charles Osei Asibey has again underlined the federation’s commitment to giving Ghanaian armwrestlers regular opportunities to compete at the highest level.

The World Championship is part of a wider development plan designed to produce elite athletes capable of winning medals at both continental and global competitions. For the Golden Arms, the New Delhi event will offer more than the prospect of podium finishes.

Competing at the championship will expose the athletes and coaches to different techniques, styles and levels of competition. That experience is expected to provide valuable lessons while also offering an important measure of Ghana’s progress in the sport.

The federation is seeking support from corporate organisations and state institutions to help fund the team’s travel. With the October championship approaching, preparations are gathering pace and the national camp is set to begin.

Ghana’s objective is to compete strongly, challenge for medals and further establish the country as a force in world armwrestling.
