China to Support Renovation and Modernisation of Ghana’s National Theatre
The National Theatre of Ghana is set for a major facelift as the government prepares to undertake a comprehensive renovation and modernisation project with support from the People’s Republic of China.
Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced the initiative during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026, describing it as a key intervention to restore the facility and transform it into a modern, world-class centre for the promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture.
According to the Minister, the project will focus on rehabilitating the Theatre’s infrastructure, upgrading its technical facilities and improving its overall functionality.
She said the initiative also underscores China’s longstanding partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector.
The Minister disclosed that following engagements between her ministry and the Chinese government, a high-level Chinese delegation visited the National Theatre in December 2025 to assess the facility and determine the scope of work required.
The planned intervention, she said, is expected to provide the Theatre with the infrastructure and technical capacity needed to better serve artists, performers and audiences while showcasing Ghanaian culture on an international stage.
Madam Gomashie further revealed that the Chinese government has pledged continued cooperation beyond the renovation to help ensure the facility is properly maintained and kept to high standards.
Meanwhile, she said management of the National Theatre has already introduced a rigorous maintenance programme as part of efforts to preserve the facility ahead of the planned modernisation.
Security at the facility has also been strengthened, she added, as the government works to protect and improve the iconic cultural landmark.
