The vigilance of a 110-year-old granny in Okaikrom in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti region saved the life of a 1-year-old baby whose mother attempted killing him in a toilet pit.

The grandmother, Abena Mariah narrated that: “my daughter had just come from the outside when the baby was lying on my lap crying. She came to me and demanded that I give the baby to her which I obliged. Minutes later, she came back crying that the baby had fallen into the toilet. I went to check it myself and heard the baby's cry from deep inside the toilet.”

She said they quickly called some men in the area to help rescue the boy.

The first man, who entered the pit said he went into the pit with a bucket but attempts to convey the boy proved futile. The man, Kwaku Fokuo said after realizing his plan was not working, they called the Ghana National  Fire Service (GNFS) to prevent the baby from entering deep into the fecal matter.
