Some 11 shops at the Republic Hall Mini Market at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology were burnt after fire gutted the area on Sunday Morning.

The intervention by firefighters ensured that the fire did not spread to the Republic Hall.

According to the University management, students who reside in the republic hall were immediately evacuated from their halls until the situation was brought under control.

Speaking to the media after the University Management visited the affected area to assess the extent of damage, the University Relations Officer,  Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe noted that no student or their properties were affected.

“This dawn, the KNUST security officers called the fire service and reported of a fire outbreak behind the Republic Hall. It’s a mini-market. The fire tender unit moved in quickly to douse the fire and while they were doing so, management of the school evacuated all the students from the hall because the market is close to the hall until the fire was fully doused. We waited a bit before we brought all the students back to the hall. So currently, live in the hall is back to normalcy and all the students are safe.”

“We want to place on record that no student nor their properties were destroyed or affected by the fire. We want to assure the students and parents that the school is very safe, and they should ignore all misinformation on social media.”

He added that a committee is being set to look into the matter.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigations and the outcome of same will be made known in due time,” he added.
