Zongo Youth, a group in the Ashanti Region, says its leaders will be petitioning Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over the killing of their 26-year-old colleague.

The group says the intervention of the monarch is needed in the gruesome murder of Alidu Lawal and others even though it has not been established that they were criminals.

At a press conference on Friday, 25 May 2018, Alhaji Saeed Kucho, President of the group, said they will comply with any advice given by the Asantehene after the petition is presented.

Kucho insisted that the body of the deceased will not be buried until Otumfuo's intervention and counsel is sought, describing the action of the police as “unfortunate”.

Alidu Lawal was gunned down on Wednesday, 23 May 2018 by police from the Suame Divisional Police command at Ohwim Amanfrom.

Family and friends numbering over 50 besieged the Suame Police Station on Thursday to demand answers.

A joint police and military team was dispatched to the station to maintain peace and order.

Meanwhile, one of the friends of the deceased, who accompanied him to Amanfrom to inspect a piece of land, bemoaned the conduct of the police, indicating that the best the police could have done was to arrest rather than shoot and kill Lawal.

For him, post-arrest investigations would have exonerated Lawal.
