Thembinkosi Lorch struck what proved to be the decisive goal in South Africa's round of 16 encounter with host nation Egypt.

The Orlando pirates striker pulled a dagger through the hearts of the vociferous Egyptians fans packed in the stadium when Bongani Zungu played an exquisite through ball to lanky Lebo Mothiba who then squared the ball for the on rushing Lorch to slot calmly past the impressive El Shenawy.

Egypt threw the sink at the South Africans to try and grab an unlikely equalizer with their best chance of the game falling to Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet who has had a stellar tournament but a night to forget by striking the ball straight at the goalie.

South African coach Stuart Baxter stayed through to his pre-match talk of causing a "national disaster" in Egypt by picking a resolute midfield of Dean Furman,Bongani Zungu and Mokotjo.

The midfield shuttlers were full of energy ,with the whole team keeping a solid shape which disrupted the Egyptian play.

Go to man Mohammed Salah who shrugged of an illness all week to make the starting eleven appeared unfit on the night with an insipid performance.

His best chance all night was to sky a half volley wide when well placed for a shot at goal.

South Africa continued the upset seen so far in the competition by beating Egypt to set up a quarter final meeting on Wednesday 10th July with Nigeria who were in the same group during the Afcon qualifiers.
