Mozambique’s president, Daniel Chapo, has promised a cash bonus to every player and member of the technical team after the country reached a historic stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Each member of the squad is set to receive 500,000 meticais (about $7,800) following Mozambique’s impressive progress at the tournament, which is being hosted in Morocco.

The pledge comes as the Mambas prepare for a high-profile Round of 16 showdown against Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Monday, 5 January, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

Mozambique’s qualification for this stage of the competition marks a significant milestone in the nation’s football history and has sparked celebrations among fans back home.

In a statement released by the presidency, Daniel Chapo praised the team for lifting national pride and showing resilience on the continental stage, describing their achievement as a reward for years of patience and belief.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, will go into the tie as favourites, but Mozambique arrive buoyed by confidence and the backing of their government and fans.

As they step onto the pitch in Fez, the Mambas will be chasing not only another historic result, but the chance to extend a fairytale run that has already captured the imagination of a nation.
