Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has expressed confidence in Felix Afena-Gyan, backing the young striker to make the most of his return to the senior national team ahead of the Unity Cup matches in London.
Afena-Gyan, now with Juventus Next Gen in Italy’s Serie C, has received a call-up to the Black Stars for the first time since 2022. His return comes as Ghana prepares to face long-time rivals Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Addressing the media, Addo acknowledged the former AS Roma player’s dip in form but emphasized that he still has potential:
“There are a lot of young players, and he’s also young. He did well, and that’s why we want to give him another chance,” Addo said.
“His career hasn’t been like he expected it to be, but this is normal in football. Sometimes you have ups and sometimes you have downs, and for him, it’s another opportunity to show himself.”
The 21-year-old striker has scored six goals in 30 appearances for Juventus Next Gen this season, showing flashes of promise as he works to rebuild momentum in his career.
Afena-Gyan is expected to join the Ghana camp in London today ahead of the Super Eagles clash. The winner of that match will progress to the final of the four-nation tournament, set to be played on Saturday, May 31, against Jamaica who defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 on Tuesday.
This tournament provides a platform for several returning and young players to prove their worth, as Addo continues shaping a new-look Black Stars team.
