Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has issued a public apology for supporting Otto Addo’s reappointment as Black Stars head coach following the team’s poor showing in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Sudan on October 15 left the team winless after four matches, putting their AFCON qualification in jeopardy.

In an interview on Agoro Fie on Onua TV, Agyemang-Badu expressed regret for backing Addo's second stint as coach, admitting that the coach may not be the right fit for the job.

“I apologise. Those who advocated for the second coming of coach Otto Addo, I gave him massive support but I’m sorry. It seems the task is beyond him,” he confessed.

Addo, who guided Ghana to the 2022 World Cup but failed to progress beyond the group stage, was controversially reappointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), despite some reservations.

Since his return, the Black Stars have struggled, recording only two wins and now facing growing pressure.

Agyemang-Badu, a former key player in Ghana’s 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning team, also voiced concern about the overall decline in the national team’s performance.

He urged football authorities to reevaluate the current direction, suggesting that taking a break from major tournaments might be necessary to rebuild the team's foundations.

“Sometimes when you talk about these things, you are tagged as a bad person,” he noted, further stating that if the Black Stars can’t defeat teams like Niger, they don’t deserve to compete in AFCON.

Agyemang-Badu’s remarks reflect the mounting frustrations among fans and stakeholders as calls for significant changes in the national team setup grow louder amidst the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.
