Doha: AFC Champions League hopefuls Al Duhail have confirmed the signing of Morocco international Medhi Benatia from Italian giants Juventus.

The reigning Qatar Stars League champions announced the 31-year-old’s arrival via their social media channels on Wednesday following protracted negotiations between the Doha-based club and their Serie A counterparts.

Since turning professional in 2005, Benatia has earned plaudits galore during his time in Europe where – besides winning numerous silverware with Juventus – he has featured for such heavyweights as Bayern Munich and Roma.

The central defender, who captained his country at last year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, arrives in Qatar with Al Duhail looking to retain their domestic crown and improve on their 2018 Continental outing which saw them equal Ulsan Hyundai Motors’ record of nine consecutive AFC Champions League victories before losing over two legs to Persepolis in the quarter-finals.

In this season’s edition of Asia’s premier club competition, Benatia and Al Duhail have Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Iran's Esteghlal for company in Group C.
