Football rivalry gave way to respect and warmth at the Africa Cup of Nations after DR Congo superfan Lubumba was embraced by Algerian Federation in a touching show of sportsmanship.
Lubumba, widely known for his colourful and passionate support of the Leopards, was warmly welcomed by Algerian Federation, who presented him with a signed Algeria national team jersey bearing his name. The gesture drew applause from those around and quickly became one of the tournament’s most memorable off-pitch moments.
The occasion was made even more special when Algeria forward Mohamed Amoura personally offered Lubumba a gift, a spontaneous act that reflected the joy of victory and mutual respect between teams after his act that seems to have mocked the DR Congo fan.
Speaking afterwards, Lubumba expressed his gratitude to the Algerian Football Federation.
“It is a great honour for me to have been invited by the Algerian Football Federation,” he said. “The gesture by the player Amoura was completely spontaneous and simply reflects his excitement after the victory.”
Lubumba also used the moment to send his best wishes to Algeria for the rest of the tournament and to highlight the historic ties between the two nations.
“I wish the Algerian national team much success in the Africa Cup of Nations,” he added. “The relations between Congo and Algeria are historic and deeply rooted; one cannot in any way deny Algeria’s support and role throughout time.”
As AFCON continues to produce intense football and fierce rivalries, the exchange stood out as a powerful reminder of the unity the game can inspire across borders, a moment where respect, history and shared passion took centre stage.
