Alphon ZU FC took the lead for the win at the first annual Betway Stephen Appiah Cup competition.
The event was held Saturday at Chorkor, Accra. In an exciting contest between eight highly ranked teams, competition was fierce and it gave fans a reason to come out and cheer.
Spectators who had wagers riding on Alphon ZU FC enjoyed moments of intense elation as their team emerged the victors. The event was made possible by Betway Ghana sponsorship.
Betway's Maiden Football Gala
The Betway Stephen Appiah Cup was the kickoff tournament in what the online betting company is planning as a yearly event.
This is good news for football fans from all walks of life. The teams are excited because it gives them the platform for improving their playing skills, showcasing their talents and the opportunity to win cash prizes, gain a little fame and other great incentives.
Eight Teams Competed
The football gala drew teams from James Town, Chorkor and their surrounding communities.
There could only be one first place winner and it came down to a heated final between Alphon Zu FC and Ni Ona Nii Ona FC.
Although the cash prize of GHC 2,500 was won by Alphon Zu FC, Nii Ona Ni Ona FC, along with Extra O United teams each received cash prizes of lesser amounts.
The three podium leaders were well rewarded for their participation in the day's events.
Inspiration for the Cup
Betway Ghana organized the competition to honor Stephen Appiah, former captain of the team Black Stars.
Appiah was thrilled and excited as he shared his experience as a beginning footballer in the same area.
Appiah is best known for his time playing for Fenerbahce and Juventus.
He is currently Betway's brand ambassador and the company could not have chosen a better representative.
