Ghanaian musician, Amaarae, has offered a unique cultural insight into why eggs are a staple in Ghanaian households revealing it's all rooted in economics, tradition, and practicality.
Speaking on a podcast, the “Sad Girlz Luv Money” hitmaker explained that for many Ghanaians, eggs are more than just a breakfast item; they serve as an affordable protein substitute in everyday meals.
“Back in the day, your father gets the most meat in the food,” she said. “If you grocery shop for the house and your mum makes stew or soup, all the meat goes to dad. So the rest of the kids get a small piece of meat plus an egg to make up for the protein.”
As a result, eggs became a reliable and cost-effective way to supplement meals with much-needed protein especially when meat was limited or reserved for special occasions.
“Chicken used to be a Christmas luxury. Now it’s normal. That’s why the egg thing is a thing because it’s a cheap supplement for protein. That’s why we eat a lot of eggs," she said
