We often talk about gender equality at the workplace, but equality in work division at home is rarely discussed. In his recent tweet, chairman of the Mahindra group, Anand Mahindra posted an image of formally dressed men and women on a racing track. The track was clear for men but for women the path was full of different domestic obstacles.

By sharing this image, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by women. This has clearly initiated a conversation on gender equality.

Mahindra wrote that the realisation dawned upon him when recently he was put in charge of babysitting his one-year-old grandson. It was during this time when he realised how success for working women requires much greater amount of effort as compared to men.

Mahindra captioned the image: “I’ve been helping to babysit my year old grandson this past week & it’s brought home to me the stark reality of this image. I salute every working woman & acknowledge that their successes have required a much greater amount of effort than their male counterparts."

Obviously, it didn’t take much time for the tweet to go viral. One of the many comments that he received on his tweet was from a woman who wrote - “at least someone realises the everyday reality of a woman‘s life. Some other interesting comments read:

"And now I hope organisations as well realise this and not just put ‘policies’ in pdfs which don’t really change any ground realities or the barriers that we face every single day at the workplace."
