Ghana could turn to experience in the wake of a major injury concern, with veteran forward Andre Ayew emerging as a potential recall option ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The possible return comes after a significant setback for Mohammed Kudus, whose participation in the tournament is now in serious doubt. His club, Tottenham Hotspur, confirmed on Thursday that the 25-year-old midfielder has suffered complications in his recovery from a quadriceps injury sustained in January. Further specialist assessment and potentially surgery is now being considered.

With just over two months until Ghana’s opening match against Panama on 17 June, the development has raised fresh concerns for the Black Stars. Kudus has been central to Ghana’s attacking play in recent years, and his possible absence would leave a significant creative gap in the squad.

‎The situation is further complicated by uncertainty on the bench. Ghana are currently without a permanent head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after the March friendlies, although an appointment is expected in the coming days.

‎In the meantime, attention has turned to Ayew, the country’s most-capped player, who has been largely absent from the national team since early 2024. The 36-year-old, however, has continued to demonstrate his value at club level, recently scoring his first goal for Dutch side NAC Breda.

Ayew’s vast experience, spanning multiple World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations campaigns could prove crucial if Kudus is ruled out. His versatility across the forward line and leadership credentials make him a strong candidate for a recall, particularly at a time when stability is needed.

Debate over Ayew’s place in the squad has persisted among fans and pundits, but Kudus’s injury has strengthened the argument for his return.

Ghana have been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama, with their campaign set to begin in Toronto. A new head coach is expected to be named by Monday, a decision that could ultimately determine whether Ayew is handed a dramatic return to the international stage.
