Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the manner in which the police officers arrested the Deputy Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho as a disproportionate move.
Mr Mahama stated that, the Police acted in a manner that is not appropriate by arresting Mr Anyidoho while they were armed at a press conference.
He wrote on his Facebook timeline “As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalisation of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as president, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate. Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable.”
Mr Anyidoho is being arrested for treason based on comments he made while speaking on an Accra based radio station Happy FM on Monday March 26 2018.
The statement was in line with a demonstration that has been scheduled for Wednesday March 28 2018 over the agreement that has been signed on behalf of the country by the Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul and approved by the Majority side of Parliament for the establishment of a US military base in Ghana.
The deal has received a lot of criticism from many Ghanaians and has prompted many bodies within the country o come to protest.
Below is the comment passed by Mr Anydoho on Happy FM...
“On January 13, 1972 a certain Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led a movement that removed the Progress Party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo-Addo’s father was a ceremonial president. Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself.
“There’ll be a civil revolt. There’ll be a people’s movement. During President John Mahama’s tenure didn’t we receive similar threats from the likes of Let My Vote Count and OccupyGhana.”
“There’ll be a civilian coup d’etat; there’ll be a social revolution and the movement is starting on Wednesday. He [Akufo-Addo] will be fed up at the presidency”
