A police officer of the Juaboso District police command is battling for his life at the St. John of God Hospital at Sefwi Asafo in the Western North Region after he was allegedly shot by six robbers.
The officer, Sergeant Thomas Akoka, was assigned as an escort to a civilian who was trying to transport gold concentration from Sefwi Kotosaa to Sefwi Juaboso on Saturday.
Upon arrival at the mining site, the officer and the civilians are reported to have been ambushed by six armed men who opened fire on them.
The officer returned fire, but the robbers managed to make away with the gold concentration after inflicting 4 gunshot wounds on him.
A re-enforcement team that was sent to rescue the officer managed to retrieve some spent shell casings from the scene.
There have been recent cases of robbery attacks in the Western and Western North Regions.
The unfortunate development has created fear among the residents.
Police in the region have therefore outlined measures to combat crime in the region.
Officials of the Western North Police Command say they are determined to put in place all necessary measures to clamp down on motor bike-related crimes.
