Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that 2010 stands out as the most memorable year of his football journey.
Gyan was a key figure in Ghana’s historic run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time.
Their campaign came heartbreakingly close to a semi-final appearance, with Gyan missing a crucial penalty in the dying moments of extra time against Uruguay.
In a candid interview with 3Xtra TV, Gyan looked back on his career, stating that 2010 held a unique significance, despite his success both in Europe and with the national team. He expressed how everything seemed to align that year.
Recalling the camaraderie in the Black Stars squad, Gyan shared humorous anecdotes from the camp. “2010 was a special year for me,” he said.
“In that squad, Kwadwo Asamoah was the funniest, and I was always the one arriving late. Richard Kingston, though, was the most punctual and was always praying.”
Gyan's contributions to the team were undeniable, as he scored vital goals throughout the tournament.
However, his missed penalty against Uruguay remains a moment etched in Ghana’s football history, a shot that could have sent the Black Stars to their first-ever World Cup semi-final.
As Ghana’s all-time top scorer and the leading African goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup history, Gyan has left an enduring legacy in football.
He officially retired from professional football on June 20, 2024, at the age of 37, after a stellar career that spanned two decades.
