Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has recounted what led to his senior brother Baffour Gyan losing interest in football.

Baffour Gyan who is the senior brother of the Ghana legend played for the Black Stars and was part of the team that qualified Ghana for its first ever World Cup in Germany in 2006 but was left out of the final 23 man list.

Baffour Gyan was placed on the standby list as he was replaced with players who never played a minute in the qualifiers leading to him hating football.

According to the former Sunderland striker this forced his brother to lose interest in football altogether as he felt he was not fairly treated.

Speaking to Asaase Radio, Asamoah Gyan revealed that Baffour Gyan lost interest in football after his omission from the final squad.

“It happened to my brother [Baffour Gyan]. In 2006 [when Ghana qualified for the World Cup for the first time], he played 90 percent of the qualifiers, and then they brought strikers who had never tasted one game [for the tournament in Germany]. He was on the standby [list],” he recounted.

“That was when my brother gave up on football. He doesn’t follow football, he doesn’t watch it, he doesn’t like it, he’s purely a businessman. Sometimes people have to be treated fairly," he revealed.

Ghana will play Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

There is no substantive coach with talks of players with Ghanaian descent switching nationality ahead of the World Cup.
